Walk home 3 times last week

Managed to walk home from office last week (from 3 nov 08 to 7 Nov 08) 3 times. Each walk lasted about 30 minutes. Feel very good to exercise and sweat especially after a day work in office.

Found a good way to sweat

I had a meeting at Tampines Changkat CC and decided to walk from office located at the Tampines Central to the CC as i still have some time for it. After the meeting, also decided to walk home from the CC as i am staying across the PIE. It will definitely cost more in terms of money and time to travel by taxi or public bus. On the way home, i realised that it was not that far to walk home and it can be as part of my execrise workout, about 25 minutes walk.

In fact, i have been walking to and from office before it moved to the present location in Tampines Central. Never think that such walking would help me physically until i went for my IPPT. I did pretty well for my 2.4km run though i din really train for it. The only physical activity that i do regularly was the walk to and from office. I was amazed of the result and realised that execrise can actually be just so simple and easy with good result.

I think it is time for me to start the walk again but from office to home only as it will be difficult to work with sweat the whole day.

Hong Kong trip Oct 2008

This is not my first Hong Kong trip.

I have been to Hong Kong a couple of times in the past few years and i enjoy it pretty much. I think Hong Kong is able to provide different travel experience with its location that is so near to China mainland, rich culture and cosmopolitan setting that can best meet my travel needs. I can easily move around in Hong Kong with the convenient and extensive metro system, a wide variety of international and local food, good shopping options and nice buying experience (market street type and shopping malls type) etc. It's a dynamic city, day and night. The cooling climate during the year end definitely gives me something that i cannot enjoy it here locally.

The upcoming trip will be quite different in a few ways:
- Staying in a heartlanded area (Tsuen Wan) in a 5 stars hotel but paying 3 - 4 stars rates.
- Visiting Shenzhen on own arrangements (no overnight)
- Going to Tung Chung and from there to visit the Lantau Island
- Ocean park (first time visiting though i have been in Hong Kong a couple of times)
- Taking a night flight on SQ. I usually take morning flight

I hope that both girl girl and foong pheng will enjoy the trip. :-)

note: the trip was booked through the Resort Holiday Pte Ltd.

Ampang Niang Tou Fu

I have been visiting the Ampang Niang Tou Fu for a couples of years. I knew about it from a makan tv programme then.

Basically, it is a very simple, no frill eating place with kopitiam type of layout, tables and chairs. U may feel that the whole setup is like one of those eating places in Malaysia. But the place is clean, bright and pretty cooling though no air-con. Of course it can be quite noisy during the peak hours. There are parking lots just in front of the eating place.

It provides about 12 - 14 niang tou fu items. Customers can decide if u want all the items or to remove some and they will replace it with what u want. $6 per person for 10 pieces (ie 60 cents per item). Rice and drink are charged separately. The eating place dun provide mee hoon, mee etc to go along with the niang tou fu. There is also no dry niang tou fu. All items are prepared and served in a big plate together with the soup in it. If it is your first visit, do also try the sour plum cold drink. :-)

I feel that the price is a bit on a high side (ie 60 cents per piece) especially when there is not much changes to its offerings. It was 40 or 50 cents then. :-( I have cut down my visits to Ampang as i have more makan options to consider as well that will also come to about the same total cost.

Nevertheless, it is still a nice place to go for lunch or dinner.
The address is 225, East Coast Road. Singapore 428922.

Do u like durian ?

I enjoy durian.

The key to eating durian is not to eat a lot but to taste a few real excellent durians. The smell and its nice tasty will stay in your mouth and mind for awhile. I feel good about it.

I prefer eating it at durian stall. Dynamic and full of excitement. People come and go with bags of durians happily to share it with family members and friends. Much better than drinking beer and chewing peanuts + smoking endlessly.

Though there are many durian stalls along the Geylang area, it is very crowded on Fri and Sat. I find it too noisy though it also full of excitement (heavy traffic as well). I usually patronize the durian stall along the Yio Chu Kang Road called 717 Trading. U can find more information on the website at http://717trading.com/717trading/index.html

However, i must confess that i dun know how to choose a good durian. I will ask the stall helpers to help me and trust that they will choose a nice one.

Besides calling them, u can also order the durian through email.

Why i enjoy reading

I love to read. A habit cultivated since young.

Used to read more chinese books borrowed from library. The result is that I have improved my Chinese language and I started to wear spectacle. Started to read more English books after graduated from NUS. Mainly IT and Management Books.

One of the few books that I managed to finish reading from cover to cover is the book titled “Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire”. A very easy and engaging book to read about Bill Gates and his early years in building Microsoft with Paul Allan. Since then, I have collected a few titles on Bill Gates and also began to build my own small library at home.

I enjoy reading as it gives me a very wonderful learning / engaging experience and to appreciate the thought and journey of the authors. It is also a very personal “affairs” without the need to organize and co-ordinate with others to get it done. The best part of it is to share the story / views with others who also like the similar subject.

While it can be pretty challenging to finish reading a book, it is much easier and fulfilling to read magazine with up-to-date information. U can finish it quite fast and it provides me with more leads such as websites, emails etc to follow up with if I would like to learn more about the subject. However, Harvard Business Review is a heavy reading and I enjoy the beautiful photos published in the National Geographics.

The challenge now is that my daughter “eats up” my personal space / time and dun have much opportunity to read more. Nevertheless, still manage to find some time to read before I sleep or to go to a quiet place to read peacefully for awhile over a simple drink. Luckily, she also enjoys reading and we will read to her before she sleeps at night.

I could consider reading as one of the great ways to enjoy life.

Brazil Churrasco

Read about the Brazil Churrasco in a magazine and decided to try out the Brazilian food for dinner. Yup, my first visit.

The restaurant I patronized is located at the Lock Road, Gillman Village along the Alexandra Road where HP, NOL and PSA Building are located. The restaurant is very nicely designed with colourful and modern feel. The layout is good with a round buffet salad bar in the center of the restaurant. Customers can easily access to the salad in regards to where they sit. Of course, the music is lively and creates a very relaxing dining experience. No samba music and dance (ie not live performance). Easy to find parking lots nearby or just in front of the restaurant (though with limited lots).

The restaurant only offers buffet lunch/dinner from Mon - Sat (Not open on Sun). Beverages have to be ordered separately that include wine, cocktail, mocktails and coffee/tea. Besides the salad bar, the main course of the buffet is the grilled / BBQ meat such as chicken, beef, mutton, fish, chicken heart/liver, ham, sausages and pineapple. There is not main course corner at the restaurant. Instead, u will see waiters carrying different freshly grilled meats serving the customers by moving from table to table. It is important to say no politely to them at times especially when you already have enough food to chew else it may not taste so nice when the meat turns a bit cold.

For the main course, i love the chicken heart, fish and pineapples. I must say that i enjoy the pineapples very very much. Though it is grilled, the pineapple is juicy and sweet. It goes very well with the main course to make u feel less "meaty" after u have a few round of grilled items. Must try and ask for more. :-) As i dun eat beef, hence no comments about its quality. Basically, the meats are tasty and well seasoned.

I also love the salad bar. Pretty different in terms of its varieties and the way it is prepared as compare to say Swensen's salad bar. I like the ceaser salad, pumpkin, fresh tomato, fried banana and mushroom. They also provide noodle and rice as hot items as part of the salad offering. The staff service level is pretty good.

Well, it is pretty expensive. S$42 per adult for dinner (excluding drinks).
If u are interested to give it a try, visit the website at http://brazilchurrasco.com/index.php for more information. There are three outlets in Singapore:

(1) 5, Lock Road. Gillman Village (Tel. 64799573)
(2) 14/16, Sixth Avenue (Tel. 64631923)
(3) 7 Club Street (Tel. 63279663)

They also have catering service (tel. 64631923) for parties/gathering.

My grading (♥♥♥♥♥ means excellent):

- Location (at Lock Road) ♥♥♥♥ (pretty convenient if u drive)
- Food ♥♥♥ to ♥♥♥♥

- Price ♥♥ (expensive)
- Dining experience ♥♥♥♥♥

Btw, remember to use the toilet. Very nicely done especially the lady toilet (♥♥♥♥♥).

Food is an excellent way to build relationship

I love to eat and love to try all possible known good food both locally and overseas.

It is a very happy feeling to finally locate and to try out something nice, reasonably price and with good service. Well, if the food, price and service dun turn out to be that promising, i will patron less frequent or not at all again especially those with a very poor service.

Of course, the best thing about having a nice food is to have friends that u will enjoy sharing and dining with them. It is not so fun to eat nice food alone. I believe that food is an excellent occasion in providing the space and time to connect and bond with people ie building relationship or networking. Some will also use food as a platform to complete a business deal just like a playing golf session.

I hope to share my dining experience here and to share with people who are just like me who like to eat and always on lookout for nice food. Feel free to comment and share with me where else i can have nice food.

Happy makan, cheers !
:-)
