Mid Year Review

It's time to do a brief review in the mid of the year.

In the past 6 months, changes take place one after another and i initiated nope. First, I change team, then DGM changed followed by a change in the chairmanship of the District. Ironically, the project team merged. I join the original team again. Very soon, some of the team members will also be shouldering a new challenge. There will be another round of adjusting to and balancing both responsibilities with a new work arrangements.

I feel like a leave floating in a water and flowing the current moving ups and downs without much choice. Ended ? Nobody knows. Best guess ? Changes will continue.....

What have not changed is my outlook of life, things that I would like to explore and to give it a try. What I value most should also remain and to cater enough time for it.

No changes can also be quite boring. Changes create opportunity as well. Change or No change, the key is to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Maintain a calm and peaceful mind, keep young at heart and to learn to live with the happy and not so happy happenings.

Eat when u are hungry, sleep when u feel tired. Life can just be so simple.
In fact, life is so simple. Agreed ? Ha...ha...ha...

Teochew dishes (2)

There was a Chinese article in Zaobao last Sat on the Teochew restaurant ie Chin Lee Restaurant (深利美食馆). I scanned the article and to share it with you here.

What interest me is the dried prawn roll and the goose palm with mushroom and sea cucumber. Will try it in my next visit. Just knew that the restaurant has been in business for 36 years. :-)

不简单, well done

Crystal Dumpling

I last eaten the Tiong Bahru's crystal dumpling (水晶包) 5 or 6 years ago. I could not find the stall after the upgrading and renovation of the Food Centre . I thought the owner had decided to retire and din "persue" further where the stall could be located.

Recently, I was sharing with Lay Yen about the nice food in the Tiong Bahru Food Centre. One of the stalls I told her was the one selling the crystal dumpling. She shared that the owner had shifted to Alexandra Village Food Centre. Wow, so they are still in operation and i decided to visit them.

I found the stall last Sunday around 3pm but they had sold out the dumpling. Hence, I revisited the stall the next at 10am. Ordered a few to try and also bought some to share it with my colleagues. It still tasted as nice and they liked it too :-)

However, the prices have increased quite a bit: 70 cents / pcs for the salty taste dumpling and 60 cents / pcs for the sweet taste dumpling.

I hope u have tasted it before else I would like to recommend that you should give it a try. U are sure to love it.

The stall opens 7 days a week from 9am onwards until sold out.

A380

Another A380 destination from Singapore Airlines - Hong Kong

I have been planning to try A380 for my holiday and it seems like it is more possible now. To better enjoy the A380 facilities and services, a longer flight distance is prefer. I will prefer taking A380 to Japan and Paris. Hong Kong is just slightly too short a distance especially if the price of the air ticket is higher than the usual SQ.

A380 to KL next ?

Photo that says more than a thousand words

He must has suffered a lot of hardship. Yet, with care, encouragement and hard work, he is able to live with dignity, to continue his study and make progress and a promising future for himself. If anyone thinks that learning / studying is a waste of time, please think again.

He is living with a very good example. I respect him and I wish him all the best.

Twitter

Created a Twitter account today.

I was not very keen initially to embrace it as I was not very sure of its value. It is positioned as a micro-messaging platform and for the authors to update his/her activities/thinking day long with followers. I thought blogging would be more user friendly for readers as I could include more text + photos + video clip. Blog also comes with handy tagging feature that makes it easy to categorize content into relevant user-defined keywords. Readers can locate the needed entries much easier as well.

What motivated me to give it a try is the ability to use the mobile technology to update one's page. I dun need to have an internet access point to read and update the content. Pretty cool :-) I am not sure if there is similar feature in any of the blogging services but the technology does appeal and make good sense to me. I can now share meaningful content easily and faster through my handphone to more people. Of course, it can be challenging to one's phone bill.

The use of Twitter in the recent few major local and international affairs have helped to increase new twitter's users and gaining much popularity. As reported in today's Zaobao, Mayor Teo was suggesting using new media such as Twitter to facilitate exchange of views over topics discussed in the Parliament and National Day Rally. He also stressed that no technology could replace the importance of having an actual face-to-face talk over coffee/tea.

Though i have a twitter account now, I foresee that i will still be using more of a blog to share my views and happenings. I look forward to a day that I could use my handphone to update my blog as well. It is definitely much convenient.

Father's Day 2009

Today is Father's Day. Simply a day delegated to all fathers. I am not sure if it is important to have a day delegated to me just because I am a father. With or without it, I am already one, forever. Just I have shared before, being a father is a honor and responsibility.

I cannot recall celebrating Father's Day when I was young. We din do it specially for it. I think there are a few reasons: Likely that my parent din like to waste much money. We stayed in a rental flat and every cents count. My father is a very serious and quiet person. I dun think we dare to try suggesting it. To everyone of us in the family, it is just another normal day, no big deal about it.

My father passed away 22 years ago. I was in army training when his condition worsen. I can still remember that my relative came to the army camp to fetch me to hospital, so that my father could see me again - one last time . That night, he left me and the family forever.

At that moment, I was not particularly sad. Maybe I was just too tired, due to the stringent army training, to feel sad over it. I think another reason was that we were not that close. I started to stay with my father and the family when I was 5 or 6 years old. The concept of father and family were too absurd for me to understand enough what it supposed to mean. Nevertheless, we spent 12 to 13 years living together.

I am very sure my father was a responsible person. He worked hard to sustain the family and sent us for education, all the way to JC. I knew he loved us. He was very worried, instead of being angry, for me when I returned very late from school without making a call home. He was standing near the bus stop, waiting anxiously and hoping to see me alighting from the bus.

I would like to thank my father for teaching me Chinese when I started schooling. He would teach me how to read and to write. Writing means pages of chinese words again and again. He could test me regularly to make sure I really understood it. That few years of "training" had strengthen my Chinese foundation very much and I am enjoying the fruit of it till now.

Our usual entertainment then was watching tv programme, in particularly, news. We hardly had family outing. My father would drive us to Malaysia on a few occasions during the 12 to 13 years. However, there was one occasion that my father drove me and my brother to East Coast Park (i think so) to play football. It was a sunny afternoon. Three of us and we played happily for hours. I always rememberd that afternoon. How i wish that moment could last a bit longer. A wish that I thought I could have deserved it.

For so many year that we lived together, I dun think I had done anything to let him know that I did appreciate his efforts and love. 2 to 3 months before he passed away, my mum encouraged me to pass him some of my monthly pay from the army training as appreciation. I was puzzled but i did. My father was lying on the bed at home then and quietly accepted it without much words. He was too sick to say anything.

Though we were not that close, I do wish that my father could be still around so that he could see us graduated, getting married, travel to different parts of the world as a family and knowing that we are also a father now.

As a father myself now, I will try my best to be a responsible person just like my father. I am sure my father was as honor as I am when my daughter first called me papa when she turned 1 year old.

Happy Father's Day.

Washing car

Finally, I got my daughter to help washing the car today.

She has been asking me for it. She was very excited when i shared with her that we go wash it this morning after my AYG dry run. I think she liked it because it is something new and she can play with water when washing the car without getting any scolding :-)

She was pretty "hardworking" when washing the car:

I am sure she has enjoyed doing the simple task. It is also another opportunity to do some exercise together. After the washing, i encouraged her with a mini ice-cream at home:

Thanks, 谨卉

Bali Club Med (3)

While we were having a relaxing moment at the bar counter, a G.O. came and started to talk to us. She asked where we were from, how long we have been in the village and how was the stay so far etc. She also started to engage my daughter and I captured their conversation in the following video:

I was surprised that my daughter was willing to talk to her and did it pretty well. :-)

The staff is a Singaporean and understudying the Chief at the moment in running the whole village, ie properly to success the current Chief in the near future. All the best :p

My birthday present for 2009

My daughter, 谨卉, gave me a birthday present :-)

She still does not know how to spell the whole words. She wrote the abc with the help of her mum by telling her to write d, a, d, d, y (as an example) on the paper. However, she drew the pictures herself ie daddy and 谨卉 and signed off at the bottom with her Chinese name. I am very happy that she could write her chinese name specially for as it is more complicated. Her mum has helped her a lot in learning to write these chinese characters.

Thanks You,
谨卉

To bath and to bond

I have been bathing my daughter since she turned 1 month old.

I was definitely pretty frighten & worry when i first bathed her. I checked that all possible windows were closed and tested the bathing water a few times to make sure that the water was warm enough and not too hot or cold. Prepared some toys for her to play while I bathed her. Her neck was still not so stiff and her skin is so smooth that it was not so easy to hold and support her.

Yet, it was a very wonderful experience and close contact with her. I could see that she enjoyed the bathing. She felt so confident and comfortable of me holding her, applying the bathing lotion on her and washing her clean. She started to kick in the water once I placed her into the bathtub. She would smile and talk in her baby language happily.

The experience was so good that I have tried to bath her whenever possible. In certain sense, I "blocked" Foong Pheng from bathing her at times, wanting to have the exclusive privilege to myself. I think that Foong Pheng had already enjoying much privilege with the 10 months pregnancy as well as the opportunity to breast feed her.

However, I began to encourage her to bath her daughter as well because I realized that I would be doing more harm than good. They also needed that close contact and using the touch as the love language to bond with her daughter.

Now that my daughter is going to be 4 years old. I think it is time for me to let her bath on her own. It may no longer be so appropriate for me to bath her as the way i used to do as she is turning into a young girl.

I will definitely miss it a lot a lot. I'm happy that she is growing well. Looking ahead, I just have to find a new experience that we, the father and daughter, will continue to enjoy doing together. Most importantly is to let her know that I still love her as the way i do when i first bathed her.

Talent

Human resource is an important and defining factor for any organization to succeed in this ever changing, connected and competitive marketplace. I happen to read an excellent writeup on the importance of people or talent in an organization as follows:

When u recruit a new staff, u have 人材。The person is considered "raw"and untested. The chinese character here ie 材 still has a "tree" ie "木". The person will need time, effort and be challenged to prove that he or she is capable and has the required "attributes" to contribute to the organization.

Once the person has proved his or her value then can the organization claims that it has the 人才 or talent, ie no more "tree" ie "木". With the talent and many more talent can then possible create the fortune ie 人财. The chinese character here ie 财 means money.

In short,
人材 -----> 人才 -----> 人财

Do you know who shared the above ? Terry Guo.
Who is Terry Guo ? The richest man in Taiwan, 郭台铭

Ming Fung says that
材 -----> 才 -----> 能财

Who is Ming Fung ? Properly the richest man at home, 杨明峰.
Ha...ha...ha...

Bali Club Med (2)

Another way to describe Club Med is its facilities and activities for the guests.

Facilities for the individuals:
Cycling / jogging track; gym; swimming pool, pool table; sports centre; spa centre; sea sports centre; beautiful landscape; theater hall; bar; beach etc (note: As I was taking some of the following few photos, i suddenly realized that it looked like our East Coast Park, one that is being privatized)

Facilities for the families with kids:
Petit Club (2 - 4 years old), mini kid Club (4 - 10 years old) and juniors club (11 - 17 years old). Each club has its own specific location within the village that comes with own facilities such as playground, kid's pool for water play, activity room etc

The daily activities makes these facilities alive than as a white elephant. The G.O. will organize various tournaments at the sports centre such as basketball, badminton, football competition; teaching the guests how to wind surfing, kaya, trapeze; games on the beach as well as in the swimming pool; 3 sessions of yoga a day etc

At night, the theater hall is dressed up for more actions. The G.O. will put up an hour of performance with a daily theme from 9.30pm onwards. Prior to the performance, there would be a cocktail reception for the guests and G.O. to mingle over drinks. The reception corner is, indeed, specifically setup using the local cultural as the theme with different daily decor + smoothing lighting.

At times, simple games such beer drinking competition is conducted or a live band show by the staff. During the performance, the MC will engage the guests to join in to dance with the music by following a few simple steps. The night is not over after watching the performance. The MC will lead the Guests, as part of the mass dance participation, into the bar counter area which by then would be turned into a dance floor with more music, drinks and dancing to late night.

My friends, it's party time :-)

Bali Club Med

There are a few ways to describe Club Med. One of it is the food that the village (Club Med's term for each of its establishment globally, eg. Bali Village, Bintan Village etc) provides for the guests and its staff.

It is always an enjoyable experience to dine in the village and i am spoiled with choices. Keywords: spacious, plentiful and warm.

-- Spacious --
The village has a big common dining area to meet the big number of guests and the staff. It has smartly designed the big area into different cosy themes and guests can choose any theme that could best meet their dining experience for the day. There are small tables for two as well as big tables for ten and in-between. All tables are properly layout with the fine dining type of standard. It also provided more than enough space for people to mingle and walk around the tables and to the food serving area without making u feel cramp and dumb to keep knocking into stuffs or people. High ceiling and good ventalization.

-- Plentiful--
The food serving area is positioned centrally and can be easily accessed. It serves different cuisines for each meal. Taking Bali village as an example, there are Orential cuisine, Korean cuisine, Japanese cuisine, Italian cuisine, Indian cuisine, Western cuisine and typical local cuisine (in this case will be Indonesian food). There are also signature dishes prepared especially by the chef for the day :-)

In addition, the dining hall provides free flow of various fruit juices, white/red wines, beer, different flavour of teas/coffees, dessert corner, salad corner etc. Though most dishes could not be considered the best of its kind, i think they have prepared the food pretty well and tasty. The food is very well arrangement. I do enjoy it. The soup is a bit salty to my standard.

The meal times are 7.15am to 9.15am for breakfast; 12.15pm to 2.15pm for lunch and 7.15pm to 9.30pm for dinner. In-between, guests can patronize another smaller dining room for late lunch or dinner if they miss the meal or need more to fill it up (not me, of course). Drinks and snacks are also served whole day at the bar counter near the swimming pool area.

-- Warm --
The staff (or the G.O.) are warm and hospitality to join the guests during the meal time. I believe they are encourage to do so to engage the guests and make them feel at ease / at home. To be a G.O., one of the requirements is that you must be a single (ie no commitment). They come from different countries: Indonesian, France, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Australia, China etc. Once you are in the village, you are in an international community.

Am I in Heaven now ? I dun know. I just know that i am still alive now. Ha...ha...ha...but it is definitely a fine place to go for relaxation and fun without much to worry about. Carefree to eat, to play, to sleep, to swim, to drink, to read, to dream and to see people from around the world.

Why smoke (2) ?

Zaobao reported about the harm of 2nd hand smoke on 4 June 2009. It shared that 2nd hand smoke has 400 types of chemicals that could cause cancer. The report ended by encouraging smokers to be more considerate and responsible for theirs friends/family members.

If the smokers are considerate and responsible, they should not have taken up the habit of smoking at all in the first place. We can only encourage them to smoke less and be more mindful whenever they smoke that they are "poisoning" a lot of people around them. The second best is for the smokers to smoke when there is nobody around them. It is definitely not so easy as Singapore is a small country.

However, they can still find such a place here, Lim Chu Kang Cemetery.

Dun wish to leave my daughter

We have been busy planning and packing for a short trip from 5 June to Bali Club Med. This is our first trip to Bali and looking forward to the nice food, scenery and some relaxing moments. Unfortunately, we have just postponed the trip as my daughter is having a high fever (38.5) and developing some flu since last night.

Me disappointed ? Nope. I am prepared to cancel the trip if it is necessary. No point going when i know that my daughter wun enjoy it and suffering in a holiday. Worst still if she is stopped at the immigration checkpoint due to the current H1N1 happening.

In fact, we had experienced the same situation 2 years ago when we were going for a short trip to Hong Kong. She had a fever and the family doctor advised that we grounded her in Singapore. We left for Hong Kong without her. I was very sad to say bye bye to her when i was leaving for airport that morning. Though we had the carefree moments for 5 days, I dun think i enjoyed very much. I felt very bad that I was on holiday while she was not feeling well in Singapore and us not at her side.

I wun wish to leave for a holiday without my daughter again. Yes, it is a bit inconvenience to re-make all necessary arrangements and to pay for the administration charges. I must not make the same mistake again. This time round, she will feel very bad as we have been sharing with her about the holiday since mid March. We are going to hurt her very very much if we go ahead with the trip without her.

I may not know how to face her when i am back. I can't even know how to face it myself. Either we go and have an enjoyable holiday together or we wun go together at all. This is my commitment to my daughter.

Will be back to office tmr :-)

忙里偷闲

As it was an urgent matters, i helped to courier some documents a few days ago so that the documents could be signed asap. To solve time and to minimize the trouble of finding parking space, PK followed me in the running of the errand.

No rain and pretty smooth traffic condition driving from point to point. When we finally finished the task, we were nearby Dempsey and we explored the area a bit. Dempsey has became a famous makan place that offers different cuisine and cafe such as Jumbo Seafood Restaurant, Long Beach Seafood Restaurant, PS Cafe, Chang's Korean BBQ, The Wine Company, Harry's Bar, Ben & Jerry's etc. It is pretty exciting at night especially on Fridays and Saturdays. :-)

When we were about to leave the area, we drove past a public carpark and i decided to stop for a short break. There was a durain stall at the carpark. I guess the stall owner just started business for the day and it was a peaceful late afternoon with not many cars and people. Perfect timing, fruitful moment.

We ordered one to share. Though it was not a D24 or XO durain grade, it tasted nice and we enjoyed much. The uncle shared that the stall will be closed for business for the day at 12 midnight sharp. It must be also pretty cooling to savour durain at night as long as there isn't many mosqitos and not too noisy. Will visit the stall again in near future.

Though a bit rush initally in getting the documents signed but we had a relaxing moment unexpectedly. Life can be very fulfilling if we know when to capture the right moment as it appears

忙里偷闲可以是一种很高尚的享受。境由心生嘛。Ha...ha...ha...
